Liquidlogic Jefe Grande in Review
By Ross Herr
There are many boats on the market these days. Finding one that fits your style is key. I have paddled the Jefe Grande for going on 3 seasons now and I look forward to many more. There are many benefits and features to this boat I would like to point out and by doing so hopefully I can answer some of the many questions people have when making their boat choice.
Let’s begin with me. I am 23 years old, 6 feet tall, size 11 feet, and I weigh in at 185lbs. One of the very first things I recognize about the Grande is my feet position. My toes are pointed up and towards the outer-top corners of the deck. They are not strained and pointed to the sides. This takes a lot of pressure off my ankles, knees, and hips when paddling for longer periods.
Next, the outfitting; after setting up my boat with the foot foam and hip pads provided, I have not moved anything. The Bad Ass outfitting does not move. I teach in my boat everyday and everything is the same as the first day I set it up. Also, the thigh braces were a very simple two screws without dealing with holding the nut on the opposite end.
Finally, paddling the Grande; this is where it counts. It comes down to the displacement hull. A displacement hull is all about confidence in my opinion. When learning, a rounded hull allows you to make mistakes, (we all make them) and recover. It is much more predictable sliding or deflecting off rocks, and if you start running drops your back will thank you dearly for the softer landing. The rocker profile on the Jefe Grande is very unique. It tapers all the way to the deck allowing for predictable resurfacing, and keeping that nose up when plowing over holes.
The volume of the Grande gives me the ability to stuff that stern with my clients lunches, first aid, breakdown paddle, Speedloader Thowbag, and anything else I might need while teaching or kayak camping. It is really easy to stuff things behind the back band and the bigger volume makes it less noticeable that there is anything back there at all.
Overall the Grande is the boat for me because it is a mix of speed, comfort, and the ability to load it up and take it down anything. I notice how forgiving it is every time I miss my line and come out clean. The simple things like the outfitting that doesn’t move and ample foot and leg room make all the difference. |
